What makes directly addressing your audience an effective persuasive technique?

By using direct address, like a personal pronoun or an imperative, the writer creates the illusion of a relationship with the reader. This synthetic personalisation makes the author more likeable, and therefore makes the reader more inclined to listen to, take on board and perhaps even agree with what the writer is trying to get across.
