What are some reasons for voting trends?

There are many reasons why people vote the way they do. A typical example is people voting a particular way because their parents vote a certain way and so people grow up in this environment and so just vote for the party their parents voted for. One contemporary example, givent the current climate, is people NOT voting out of political apathy. Some people may feel that they are saturated with politics and are "sick of it" and do not want to participate in the political process. However, political apathy extends beyond being frustrated with the amount of politics they are exposed to every day. Some people may become politcally apathetic because they feel the current parties do not represent their interests. Conversely, some may vote differently to how they usually would because they "want something different." An example of this would be the election of President Donald Trump in the US. Many people were asked why they voted for Trump, with them responding that they were unhappy the Obama presidency and that Hilary Clinton represented a continuation of his presidency.
