2476 people are at a football match. The ratio of men to women is 3 : 1. How many more men than women are at the match?

Ratios are a way of comparing the amount of two things in a whole. In this case we are comparing the number of men and women in a football match, so, the total number of people at the match is equal to the sum of men and women. Using the ratio, we can add the 'parts' together to get 4. So in order to find out how many people, out of the 2476 people at the match, create one 'part' of the ratio we would divide 2476 by 4 to get 619. Now, we can find out how many men and women there are. Only one 'part' of the ratio consists of women, so we know immediately that there will be 619 women. We have 3 'parts' for the men so we can calculate the number of men by multiplying 619 by 3 to get 1857. To check this we can add the number of men to the number of women and see if it comes to 2479 (619 + 1857 = 2476, so we are correct so far). Finally, to find the difference we simply take 619 away from 1857 to get 1,238 as our final answer.
