Is there a way to find out a nouns gender?

Although it may seem that the gender of French nouns is random and you have to memorise each, there is a simple way of using the word's ending to gauge it's gender.

Masculine Endings:

-age

-ment

-il, -ail, -eil, -ueil

(but not -té)

-eau and -ou

-ème, -ège

-i, -at, -et and -ot

-er

-oir

-isme

-ing

-ard

Words ending in other consonants (in the spelling).

Unfortunately there are exemptions to this rule - the one to remember is words that describe male people.

Feminine Endings

-tion, -sion and -son

-ure

-ude, -ade

-ée

-té

-ière

Consonant followed by -ie

-euse

-ance, -ence

-ine, -ise, -alle, -elle, -esse, -ette etc
