Examine the growing need for environmental management at a global scale.

Environmental management, measures or strategies to preserve, protect or prolong the environment’s condition, is becoming increasingly important as the globe is faced with more and more issues that put us and the environment at risk. At times such issues have been linked with the increasing bulk of global interactions and the increasing demand for various commodities. As competition among TNC’s is high and corporations aim to reduce costs as much as possible, many polluting industries have had a detrimental impact on the environment. In China the Pearl River Delta (PRD) has been the recipient of huge foreign direct investment (FDI) for the past decades. As a result, rapid industrialisation has occurred in the region, especially within cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The area now employs over 30 million people, and Shenzhen’s Foxconn factory alone employs 230,000 people. Waste pollutants from those factories and industries have been released into the air and water systems. This has led to contamination of the local environment, in Guangzhou 8/10 of rainfall were acid in 2007, and some villages have cancer rates thirty times higher the national average due to hygroscopic PM2.5 pollutants. It is estimated around 300 million drink contaminated water in mainland china, many of whom live within the PRD. This is a huge concern for locals, who are at risk of decreased life expectancies and high mortality. The examples not only highlight but also emphasise the need that some form of environmental management is essential to protect the millions in this high risk area.
