Suggest how one or more of the conditions in a squatter settlement (figure 5) affects the lives of the people living there.

One condition which can be seen in figure 5 is what appears to be raw sewage or stagnant water surrounding the homes. This would increase the chance of the inhabitants catching water-bourne diseases, such as cholera which kills up to 143,000 per year according to the WHO. Another condition shown in the photo is poor housing quality, with materials such as corrugated metal and unsecured bricks - this means that when natural disasters occur, the death rate is higher due to building collapse - a 2010 landslide in a Rio favela killed 200.
