Outline the Stages of Mitosis

Pre-Mitosis:

Interphase:

 - DNA as uncondensed chromatin

 -  DNA contained within nucleus

 - Centrosomes etc duplicated

 - Cell enlarged

Stages of Mitosis

Prophase:

 - DNA Supercoils & chromosomes condense

 - Chromosomes comprised of chromatics

 - Paired centrosomes move to opposite poles of the cell & form microtubule spindle fibres

 - Nuclear membrane breaks down, nuckeus dissolves

Metaphase

 - Microtubules connect to chromosome centromeres

 - Microtubule depolymerisation = shortening and contraction of spindle fibres

 - Chromosomes align with cell centre

Anaphase

 - Contraction of spinde fibres continues - sister chromatids separate

 - Chromosomes move to opposite poles

Telophase

 - On arrival of chromosomes at poles, spindle fibres dissolve

 - Chromosomes decondense

 - Nuclear membrane reforms

 - Cytokinesis occurs, dividing the cell
