How does the art of Andy Warhol comment on the modern society?

Andy Warhol was a visual artist working in the 1960s in New York. He is best known for his involvement with Pop Art culture and movement.

His work drew heavily on the modern and popular (hence pop art) - one of his most famous works is the portrait of Marylin Monroe, reproduced many times over. By losing authenticity through reproduction, Warhol commented on the role of advertisement and the worship of celebrity prevalent in his time. His fascination with the sensational is also reflected in his 'darker pieces' such as Silver Car Crash or Electric Chair. Here, Warhol commented on society's almost morbid obsession with the shocking and the fact these shocking images began to connect with entertainment.
