Which of these periods was the more successful for the treatment of disease and infection, Ancient Greece or the Medieval World? You must include both periods in your answer.

To successfully answer this question the student needs to describe and evaluate both periods in depth and compare their successes - defined here as the extent to which the period contributed to the advancement of the treatement of diseases and infections. As the question is worth eight marks, four marks and equal attention should be given to each period. A simple way to structure this essay and ensure that you answer the question is: Introduction + period 1 + period 2 + conparision/judgement + conclusion. Some of the main treatments from Ancient Greece include: Greek doctors and the Asclepion, healthy lifestyle, clinical observation, re-balancing of the four humours. Some of the main treatments from the Medieval World include: Christian doctors and day to day medical care, superstition and the use of monasteries. A comparison may conclude: Although there were improvements in the skills of doctors in the Middle Ages they still centred their work on the work of Ancient Greece (Hippocrates and Galen). Ancient Greece was thus more revolutionary and influential as doctors tried to find practical cures against dependency on the impact of superstition.
