How influential is the Left within the Democratic Party

The left wing or progressive wing of the Democratic party have evolved over time, their roots primarily being based in the failed presidential campaign of George McGovern in 1972. Traditionally they support initiatives that expand the federal governemnt in order to tackle poverty and other issues, more recently they have tended to advocate for free or reduced tuiton fees across the US.
