What are the main roles of congress?

Congress has three main roles. Firstly, it provides representation to US citizens. Congressmen and women are elected officials who represent the needs and rights of its citizens within Congress. Secondly, it is responsible for the legislative process. All legislative power resides within Congress, and therefore it is responsible for the creation and scrutinisation of all new laws. Finally, Congress is responsible for overseeing the president. Each branch of government has different powers which prevent one branch from dominating the political system. Congress has powers such as the power of the purse and the veto override that allow congress to perform an important oversight role of the president.
