NADH and FADH both carry hydrogen ions (protons) and electrons to the inner mitochondrial membrane. Here the coenzymes release protons and electrons into the electron transport chain, becoming NAD and FAD. The electrons move from intermembrane protein to intermembrane protein, decreasing in energy as they travel along. The energy produced by this is then used to pump protons into the intermembrane space. The protons then diffuse down their concentration gradient through ATPsynthase to convert ADP and inorganic phosphate into ATP.
