Tell me why you want to study Classics at this university? (personal statement)

Independently learning Latin and Classics has reinforced my decision to study the ancient world. I look forward to focusing on History alongside Literature in order to uncover a full picture of the ancient civilisations. My determination to enhance my language skill is fuelled by a desire not to rely on translation. However I was reminded you can also gain with translation while reading Tales from Ovid alongside the Metamorphoses; for example I liked how Ted Hughes altered the tale of Pygmalion to give the statue her own will. On the other hand while reading Ovid’s love poems it was very clear how much richer original Latin is, having studied some of The Amores during AS.
