In a medical school interview, how should I respond to the question "Why do you want to be a doctor?"

This is one of the most commonly asked questions in medical school interviews so it's best to have your answer really well prepared. It's a bit of a scary question to answer but, once you have an answer, you'll be so happy when they ask it!When I was preparing for interviews I got really worried about this question because I couldn't think of an exciting answer, but that's not what they're looking for. The most important thing is for this answer to be personal. The easiest way to do this is to use examples. It could be the fact you looked after a family member (some people say this is cliche and too many people use it but, if it's true, use it!), that you had some really interesting work experience, or even just that you saw a TV programme which made you think more about being a doctor. Interviewers much prefer short and snappy answers so it doesn't have to be more than a couple of sentences long. Try and practice it a few times with a friend or family member, but don't learn it off by heart - it sounds much better if it's natural.
