What are the techniques used by the writer to arise the interest of the reader in terms of expression and discourse structure?

This question requires students to select examples of language use from a section of the text and  comment on the effect the language use has on the reader. To answer this question one might need to think of the use of verb tenses which might imply recency or recalling events from the past, specific language features such as the use of metaphors, comparison, epithets which give off specific feeling to the reader.
