What are the techniques used by the writer to arise the interest of the reader in terms of expression and discourse structure?

This question requires students to select examples of language use from a section of the text and  comment on the effect the language use has on the reader. To answer this question one might need to think of the use of verb tenses which might imply recency or recalling events from the past, specific language features such as the use of metaphors, comparison, epithets which give off specific feeling to the reader. Therefore such features creates a specific atmosphere in the text which is meant catch the attention.In summary the aim of this questions is to examine how students comment on the effects of language and explore the effect of specific words and phrases to make sure that they have understand the message of the text and that they can analyze why the writer has used specific language features to get his message across all in all demonstrating awareness of the language .
