Outline the function of an interrupt.

The CPU performs millions of operations every second on data. When a high-priority code needs to be run, a function of the OS, called an interrupt, is triggered, which subsequently calls an interrupt-handler to handle the interrupt. Interrupts are used commonly for hardware devices, such as when the mouse pointer is moved or a keyboard click is made.
