how do i make the past tense?

To form the past tense we need to know 3 things: whether we need to use avoir or etre, how to conjugate avoir or etre and the past participle of the verb that we want to be in the past tense. So the first step is to work out if we need avoir or etre- MRS VANDERTRAMP is a good way to remember all the verbs that take etre. Then, we need to conjugate avoir/etre to match the subject of the sentence so if it is 'je' we need 'ai' or 'suis'- we can draw a table of the conjugations if it will help you remember. Finally we need to put the verb into the past tense: there are rules that tell you how to do this, we will draw a table with some examples, and a list of the most popular irregular verbs. Now we can put it all together with a few examples of different verbs!
