Describe the mechanics of breathing for inspiration during exercise. (5)

During exercise the mechanics of breathing for inspiration is different from that during rest. The diaphragm and external intercostal muscles along with additional muscles like the pectoralis minor contract with a greater force which causes the rib cage to expand further. This in turn increases the volume of the lungs which therefore decreases the pressure of the lungs resulting in more air entering the lungs needed for exercise as air moves from high to low pressure.
