Arnold wants to buy new pizza trays for his pizza restaurant. The trays individually have an area of 650cm3. He makes his pizzas so that they have a circumference of 94.25cm. Will one pizza tray be large enough to fit one of his pizzas?

GCSE MathematicsWe must work out the area of the pizza to work out if the pizza tray is large enough for it. (Calculator allowed)
1 . We know the circumference of a circle is equal to pi x diameter. Circumference = πxdTherefore we can work out the diameter of the pizza. Diameter = circumference/πDiameter = 94.25/π = 30cm
2 . We can work out the radius of the pizza from the diameter. The radius is half the diameter. r = 1/2d or (d/2)Radius = 30/2 = 15
3 . From the radius of the pizza we can work out the area of the pizza. Area = πr2Area = πx152 = 706.85cm2
4 . Therefore the pizza trays are not large enough for Arnold's pizzas as his pizzas have an area of 706.85cm2 and the trays only have an area of 650cm2.
