What are two ways in which the agents of socialisation influence ethnic identity?

One of the best ways to set out this question is to split it into 5 separate points per paragraph. There would be two paragraphs needed for this question as the question asks for two ways. Each paragraph is split into: 1. Point2. Evidence3. Explanation4. Link to question5. Link to key sociological terminology. The key words will be put in bold 1. One way in which an individual’s ethnic identity can be influenced is through the family.2. For example, Ghumann (1999) found that Asian families socialise children into a pattern of duty, obligation and loyalty to the extended family community as well as religious commitment.3. This begins to socialise the individual into the norms and values associated with their ethnic identity.4. This shows how family can influence the ethnic identity of an individual as the parents use sanctions in order to encourage this behaviour.5. If the individual does not conform to the expected behaviours then they are likely to experience informal sanction such as being “grounded” which will make them less likely to oppose the behaviour again. 1. Another way in which an individual’s ethnic identity can be influenced is through the peer group.2. For example, Alexander (1996) found that the peer group was essential in what she described as the “art of being black”. The males showed a strong cultural attachment to being one of the boys.3. This begins to socialise the individual into the norms and values associated with their ethnic identity.4. This shows how peer groups can influence the ethnic identity of an individual as peers act as role models which individuals look up to and attempt to copy.5. The individual imitates the behaviour of their friends in order to feel accepted by the group. This, in turn, socialises the individual into norms and values associated with their ethnic identity.
