What is the difference between validation and verification?

Validation: Checking that the data is sensible or reasonable. It is carried out at the time of data entry using validation checks. (Format Checks, Range Checks, Length Checks, etc.)

Verification: Checking data is consistent (eg: double entry of an email). The two entries are compared and unless they are both 100% the same then the user data isn't verified as being accurate.
