DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between DNA strands, separating the double-stranded DNA into single strands and exposing the nucleotide bases.DNA polymerase joins adjacent DNA nucleotides through formation of phosphodiester bonds, forming the 'sugar-phosphate' backbone of the DNA strand.
