Describe how regulators maintain a constant body temperature?

Receptors in the skin send messages to the hypothalamus in the brain which then sends nerve impulses to effectors around the body. Examples of effectors include sweat glands, blood vessels and muscles. The bodies temperature can be changed by increasing/decreasing the output of sweat to decrease/ increase the temperature respectively, and by the muscles contracting, causing shivering. This generates heat. There is also vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels) and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels). Vasoconstriction helps increase body temperature as it decreases the amount of blood that goes close to the surface of the skin meaning less heat is lost, and vasodilation decreases body temperature as more blood can get to the surface of the skin and lose heat.
