How would I structure an answer to this question: Which of the following was the more important reason why the Weimar Republic was in danger in the years 1919–1923: economic problems or political unrest? (taken from an AQA past paper)

First, you should pick out the key words of the question. In this case, the question is asking you specifically about two factors, economic problems versus political unrest. This means you shouldn't discuss any other factors, which means you should go into as much depth as you can for each factor. As this is only a twelve mark question, there is no need for a formal introduction; you can write about the first factor immediately. Aim to write a developed paragraph with several points for each element; two points per paragraph is ideal, but most importantly remember to wrap up each paragraph with a two-sentence mini-conclusion that summarises your points. Finally, you must write a separate concluding paragraph where you weigh both factors against each other, and come to a definitive and clear resolution. This way, the examiner can clearly see that you have not only discussed the topic at hand, but are also able to come to a reasoned judgement regarding your argument.
