How is ATP generated via the electron transport chain?

Electrons travel down the electron transport chain via electron carriers at successively lower energy levels. This causes protons to be pumped into the intermembranal space, establishing an electrochemical proton gradient. Protons move back into the mitochondrial matrix via the ATP Synthase ion channel(complex 5) which undergoes a conformational shape change, allowing the production of ATP from ADP and Pi.
