On what grounds have conservatives supported authority?

Authority is defined as the right to exert influence over others by virtue of an acknowledged obligation to obey. The roots of the conservative ideology lie in authoritarianism, in three ways.
Firstly, the conservative view of human nature, and more specifically, human imperfection, means that they place a high premium on authority. Conservatives believe that people seek the comfort of knowing their place and being told what to do. This counters rootlessness and anomie (Durkheim), thus grounding people in a specific role which most desire. Imperfection is also moral in the eyes of the conservative, meaning authority is equally necessary to control recklessness which is bound to arise.
Secondly, conservatives believe that authority arises naturally, from the need to ensure that children are cared for. As an extension of the family as the framework of society, conservatives view authority as rooted in the nature of society and its institutions. This is reflected in Burke’s idea of ‘natural aristocracy’ which he used to argue that certain people are born leaders.
