What are the main characteristics of a country in stage 1 of the DTM?

The demographic transition model is a representation of how a country's population changes over time with development. Stage 1 represents populations at the beginning of this model. It is characterised by a high Birth Rate and high Death Rate. The population therefore remains low and stable.A high BR can be due to characteristics including the need for a large family to work in agriculture, lack of contraception and family planning, and a high infant mortality rate.A high DR can be explained by lack of clean water supply, high levels of disease, and a lack of access to health care. Examples of populations in stage 1 of the DTM could be rural communities in Bangladesh or indigenous populations in the Amazon.
