How do I write a good introduction to an essay?

The introduction can be the hardest part for some people as it is the first and therefore sometimes most daunting task. However, once you get your head around it and get a good template for all further essays, it becomes a lot less daunting. A good introduction should introduce the ideas of your essay clearly and succinctly by outlining your main argument. It should set out what the essay is going to achieve, using a clear, assertive tone. The introduction is the first impression that the examiner gets of your work so you want to ensure you write in a tone that is confident and clear. A nod to the question is important as it shows that you have understood what the question is asking you to explore. For example, if the question is asking you discuss familial relationships, use that term/terms like 'family' within your introduction to show that you have grasped the needs of the question. A good introduction only needs to be one clear paragraph that introduces the bulk of your essay sophisticatedly. Once you get into the habit of doing this, it becomes a lot less daunting and a lot easier.
