What is the importance of the Central Limit Theorem in carrying out hypothesis tests?

The Central Limit Theorem tells us that, regardless of the population distribution, as sample size increases the distribution of the sample mean tends to be normally distributed around the population mean and its standard deviation decreases. This allows us to extend the hypothesis testing approach used for normally distributed populations to those that are not normally distributed.
