What is the role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in a eukaryotic cell?

Site of protein synthesis. RNA is transcribed in the nucleus and travels to the ribosomes on the endoplasmic reticulum (which are located in the cell cytoplasm) for translation/protein synthesis.
