What are coordinating and subordinating conjunctions and how do I use them in a sentence?

Conjunctions are joining words that link two different parts of a sentence together.

There are two main types of conjunction: coordinating and subordinating

Coordinating conjunctions:

Und- And

Oder- Or

Sondern- But (instead/rather)

Denn- Because

Aber- But

These conjunctions join two parts of the sentence together in a similar way to in English as these words do not change the word order of the next clause in the sentence.

Und

Ich habe Sushi gegessen. Ich habe Orangensaft getrunken.

Ich habe Sushi gegessen und ich habe Orangensaft getrunken.

Oder

Wir können in den Park gehen. Wir können nach Hause gehen.

Wir können in den Park gehen oder wir können nach Hause gehen.

Sondern

Ich will nicht Fleisch essen. Ich will Gemüse essen.

Ich will nicht Fleisch essen, sondern ich will will Gemüse essen.

Denn

Er studiert Biologie. Er will Arzt sein.

Er studiert Biologie denn er will Arzt sein.

Aber

Ich möchte ein neues Auto kaufen. Ich möchte auch ein neues Haus kaufen.

Ich möchte ein neues Auto kaufen aber ich möchte auch ein neues Haus kaufen.

Subordinating Conjunctions

Weil- Because

Obwohl- Although

Dass- That

Wenn- If/ Whenever

Ob- Whether

Warum- Why

Bevor- Before

Bis- Until

Da- As/ Since

Damit- So that/ In order that

Nachdem- After

Seit/ seitdem- Since

Solange- As long as

Trotzdem- Despite the fact that

Während- While/ whereas

After using a subordinating conjunction, the verb is sent to the end of the clause in which the subordinating conjunction was used.

You can also start a sentence using a subordinating conjunction as long as you then put the conjugated verb to the end of the clause.
