“The Night of the Long Knives was the most dramatic and significant single event during the establishment of Hitler’s supremacy” using your own knowledge (including form the photocopy) how valid is this interpretation? Give reasons

This statement is valid to an extent, due to the fact that although the Night of the Long Knives greatly aided Hitler’s reassurance of total power over Germany this was not the only significant event that allowed Hitler to rule as Fuhrer. The Night of the Long Knives took place on 30th June - 1st of July 1934 which was a purge where Nazi supporters and officers murdered SA officials, the conservative monarch of von Papen’s office as well as left-wing opposition. Even though the number of deaths are unclear Hitler managed to remove individuals including Ernst Rohm, Kurt von Schleicher and Gregor Strasser. By doing so Hitler had reassured the military that the SA was no threat to them, he had calmed large industrialists as trade unions such as von Schleicher wanted to strengthen trade unions and he had eliminated opposition from within and outside his party which allowed him to have full control over the country. However, if it weren’t for events such as the Enabling Act in 1933 which allowed Hitler to pass laws and decrees without consulting the Reichstag, Hitler couldn’t have as easily eliminated other opposition; in addition to this due to this act (as well as the Reichstag fire decree) Hitler managed to arrest communists and religious leaders of whom preached against Nazism. On the other hand, the Night of the Long Knives was probably the most important of these factors as many officials were immediately silenced and Hitler gained the trust of the army, the rich and the German people all at once; whereas the Enabling Act created more opposition which he had to deal with unlike the above where all opposition in Germany was eliminated.
