What are the different types of migration?

There are three main types of migration. these are chain migration, relay migration and step migration. Chain migration is when a migrant moves to a destination country for a while, finds a job and get financially settled before facilitating the movement of other relatives within their social group to the destination country. These migrants in turn find jobs and grow a community of migrants. They are the first link in a chain and it grows steadily as more migrants get established in the destination country and build a community, thereby facilitating further migration from that community. Examples of this type of migration include the growth of many indian and pakistani communities in Britain in the post colonial era as migrants use the close ties of britain with its former colonial territories as the first pull factor which are then amplified as successive generation's of migrants become established in britain.Relay migration is usually temporary migration where one member of a family moves for a while to a destination country to find work in order to support family or other dependents back home. After a time, this migrant will return home but another person, often a younger sibling will migrate in turn to continue to provide a remittance stream to support the family. a Classic example of relay migration is women moving from countries such as malaysia to countries such as hong kong to find work as maids and cleaners in wealthy family homes. They work for a time to support there family, before returning home. Finally step migration refers to migrants who come to a country in order to use it as a stepping stone for further migration. Migration into Italy is a classic example of step migration asd many migrants cross the mediterranean to italy in order to enter the EU and then travel on to other countries within the schengen area. They may take temporary work in italy to raise funds before moving on. This is step migration.
