What is a theodicy?

A theodicy is an explanation for how there can be evil in the world if there is an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-loving God. An example of this might be that evil is the result of humans abusing their free will and free will is a hugely valuable gift from God. But God could not give humans free will without also giving them the ability to commit evil.
