My explanation for this common question would involve recognizing the differences in sources (for which there are several competing theories), decade of writing, and background of the gospel writer. Matthew, for instance, as a Jew focuses more on converting the Jews of contemporary society than Mark, who wrote for a primarily Greek audience. I would continue as to how these differences in writer affected the material written, resulting in the differences - sometimes subtle - between each gospel.
