I don't understand how to structure an essay about the theme of control in 'The Tempest,' how would you do it?

When you write an essay about a theme, you will want to cover different bases of it. For example, instead of focusing on just physical control, it is also important to discuss emotional control. The way I would start is to pick three key points that you think are relevant and this is a good way to begin any essay. It is important to distinguish the contrast between 'controller' and the one being controlled, so a good way to start off it by jotting down some notes on the character's relationships with each other. An essay plan could start like this... Paragraph one could discuss the different statuses of Prospero and Caliban, due to the idea of coloniser vs native and thus master vs slave. It could be interesting to explore the idea of slavery, race and discrimination here and see where it takes you. What makes Caliban bottom of the hierarchy? Is Caliban really a monster? Another paragraph could be on Prospero's control over Miranda. It is clear that the wizard loves his daughter, but she is continuously regulated by her father - for example, he often speaks to her in commands and makes derogatory comments. What does this suggest about patriarchal control? Your last point could be about Prospero's control over Ariel. Throughout the play we see that the fairy is taken advantage of and somewhat exploited by the wizard. Does this mean that Ariel a slave like Caliban? How does Prospero manipulate the sprite? In each paragraph you will want to discuss the kind of control that the characters face and the effect that it has on them. Be creative and inventive with your ideas, but make sure to back each statement up with a quote! Follow the strict plan of point, quote, analysis e.g. Prospero's abusive control is conveyed by his ability to harm Caliban, due to his powerful magic (point). He says 'thou shalt have cramps.'(quote) 'Cramps' suggests the wizard is inflicting physical pain upon the weak, implying that Prospero takes advantage of his magical gift and uses it to remain the most powerful character and head of the hierarchy.
