What is the average temperature in September?

Question

The average temperature in May is 18 ºC.

The average temperature in November is a third of the average temperature in May.

The average temperature in September is twice the average temperature in November.

What is the average temperature in September?

---------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 3 key pieces of information the question gives us:

1) The average temperature in May is 18ºC

2) The average temperature in November is a third of the average temperature in May

3) The average temperature in September is twice the average temperature in November

(I know I may have just rewritten the question but for the sake of understanding this is key)

In order to answer this question there are 2 steps required:

Step 1) Find the average temperature of November

Step 2) Use that to find the average temperature in September

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calculations

Step 1) The average temperature in November is calculated by doing 18 divided by 3 which gives us 6.

Step 2) Therefore the average temperature in September is 6 multiplied by 2 which gives us the answer of 12ºC
