How can you show that you have learnt from your work experience in your personal statement?

Try to keep a logbook of specific examples when on a work experience placement as this will become very useful when preparing for an interview and writing your personal statement. Remember to remove any names or identifiable characteristics of the patient to adhere to confidentiality. http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/ethical_guidance/confidentiality.aspIn your personal statement, talk about a few of these key examples and describe the professional's actions and reactions in the situation, how you felt during the placement and what you felt you learnt about the medical professional as a result of it. You may also want to comment on what you felt you learnt about yourself as a result of the placement. It is better to reflect on a few key examples than to cram lots of examples in with very little explanation. For example,"During a GP placement I saw a distressed patient who thought he had Parkinson’s disease after looking on the internet. The GP explained how anxious patients could become after self-diagnosing and I saw how challenging it is for doctors to then reassure their patients effectively.""During a GP placement I saw a distressed patient who thought he had Parkinson’s disease after looking on the internet.” I described here what I saw during one of my placements.“The GP explained how anxious patients could become after self-diagnosing” I commented on how the professional reacted in the situation.“I saw how challenging it is for doctors to then reassure their patients effectively” I commented on what I learnt from the situation, and a deeper level of understanding of the demands of the career.
