How do I analyse a short story?

A short story isn't a novel and it isn't a poem - it's an entirely new genre that can take us by surprise when we have to do a close reading of one. However, they can be filled with analytic potential and interesting ideas which shouldn't be ignored just because they are new or unfamiliar and can provide an original or thought provoking text to work with for coursework.
