How do I embed a quotation in my essay?

The key with embedding a quotation is to ensure that the sentence still flows as it would without the quotation inserted. Here are two examples of good and bad practice, taken from 'Of Mice and Men':

Good practice:

Steinbeck states that 'Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water', which suggests that he behaves like an animal.

Bad practice:

'Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water'. This shows that he behaves like an animal.

By embedding your quotes as in the first example, your essay is written in a more fluent manner, and avoids short sentences with regular pauses which can disrupt the flow of your essay.
