You are describing an action in the past which had a duration so you would need to use l'imparfait de l'indicatif.

The example would become - je travaillais

The endings for different verbs are always the same : -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient

Just pay attention to which group of verbs it falls in as the radicals may change.

eg. finir (group 2) - je finissais

prendre (group3) - je prenais
