When writing a formal letter, what greetings and endings should I be using?

For greetings (formule d'appel) you should use the equivalent to Dear Sir/Madam which is Monsieur/Madame

When ending, you  need to end with a formule de politesse

eg. Je vous prie d'agréer, Madame, Monsieur, mes salutations distinguées.

Depending on whether you are waiting for a reply or if you want to thank them you can add different phrases around
