Analysing, Reviewing and Commenting

 

 

These 3 types of writing can be very similar.

 

They require:

  • a thought-out analysis of the topic
  • careful selection of information after analysis
  • a well-structured, personal writing based on the analysis.

 

The difference between analysing, reviewing and commenting mainly depends on:

  • the blend of fact and opinion in your writing
  • how subjective or objective the piece of writing needs to be.

 

Questions to ask when analysing:

  • Can you think critically about a topic?
  • Can you gather information about a topic, and then reflect on it?
  • Can you break a topic down into smaller pieces in order to express your ideas about it?
  • Can you consider different viewpoints about a topic?

 

Questions to ask when reviewing:

  • Can you structure your writing effectively so that the reader can gain an overview of the topic?
  • Are you able to stick to the topic and not go ‘off-piste’?
  • Are you looking at the piece as a whole instead of going into minor details?
  • Can you summarise and give your opinion on a topic?

 

Questions to ask when commenting:

  • Can you structure an effective personal response to a topic?
  • Are you able to show you can formulate your own opinions?
  • Can you be subjective and do more than summarise the topic?

 

A sample structure for a piece of analyse, review or comment work:
