How do you form the present subjunctive?

There is a very simple way of forming the present subjunctive in French; take the 3rd person plural present conjugation of a verb (e.g. prendre -> prennent), then remove the 'ent' ending (so 'prendre' in the present subjunctive would be 'je prenne', 'tu prennes', 'il prenne' etc.). However, not all verbs follow this formula, so there are some irregulars. It is important to remember the present subjunctive conjugations for the following verbs (also known as 'the Big 4'): avoir, être, aller, and faire. They conjugate as follows; Avoir J'aie Tu aies Il ait Nous ayons Vous ayez Ils aient Etre Je sois Tu sois Il soit Nous soyons Vous soyez Ils soient Aller J'aille Tu ailles Il aille Nous allions Vous alliez Ils aillent *N.B. for oral exams: the pronunciation of 'aie' and 'aille' are quite different, so make sure not to get them mixed up! 'J'aie' is pronounced a lot like 'j'ai', whereas 'aille' is pronounced like 'eye' in English.
