You might want to make their worries about the future disappear, but it\u2019s hard to know how. There could be a lot of unknowns for you to work out together too \u2013\u00a0like what happens if they don\u2019t get the grades they were expecting. Can they still go to uni or study the subjects they want? What options have they got?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a lot to take in. So, to help you through, we\u2019ve pulled together our top tips on supporting your teen before, during and after results day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1\">How to prepare your teen before results day<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the weeks before they get their results, your teen will be feeling worried for a whole host of reasons. Will they get the grades they want? Will you be disappointed? If they\u2019ve applied to uni,\u00a0 will they get in? It\u2019s not hard to see why all these worries can feel overwhelming. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">1. Reassure them that they can&#8217;t disappoint you<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of their anxiety might be about disappointing you (even if they haven\u2019t said so). Remind your teen that you\u2019ll support them whatever grades they get, as it can help take the pressure off. You could also remind them of all the things they\u2019re good at beyond just academic performance. It\u2019s about helping them get perspective and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/exams-and-revision\/confidence-building-exams\/\">building up their confidence<\/a> before the big day.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">2. Remind them that setbacks are normal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teens often feel like they\u2019re not good enough \u2013 especially when things don\u2019t go as planned. The good news is that you can help them see setbacks in a different light. The key is changing the story they\u2019ve learned about mistakes and failures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of: \u2018I must not make mistakes\u2019 or \u2018If I make mistakes then I\u2019m a failure\u2019 help them see mistakes as a completely normal part of learning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help to reframe their thoughts by sharing stories of your own setbacks with them. Or, if it feels right, you could share stories about famous people who\u2019ve made mistakes or had setbacks, which actually led them to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/from-setback-to-success-8-film-characters-who-didnt-give-up\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better things<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Let them know there&#8217;s always a plan B<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of the time, plan B turns out to be much better than plan A! That was the case for our tutor Tommy who had to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/a-level\/your-guide-to-ucas-clearing-time-for-plan-b\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pick a uni through Clearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 it ended up being the best thing to happen to him. He loved Leeds and really enjoyed his course.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your teen know that if they don\u2019t get the grades they were hoping for, it doesn\u2019t mean they can\u2019t go to uni. You can remind them if they\u2019re really unhappy with their results that they\u2019ll have the chance to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/responsibility-for-autumn-gcse-as-and-a-level-exam-series\/centre-responsibility-for-autumn-gcse-as-and-a-level-exam-series-guidance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resit the exam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> next term too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also a good idea to chat about other options that are out there, like doing an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/why-an-apprenticeship-might-be-right-for-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apprenticeship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can earn a degree and get work experience at top companies like Google and Rolls-Royce without facing a mountain of debt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we all know, life comes with twists and turns. It will really help to explain that they\u2019ve always got choices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Encourage them to do fun summer activities.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worrying about results day won\u2019t make it come around any sooner. Planning fun summer activities can help to distract your teen. Encourage them to see friends, go to the cinema or head outside for walks and adventures together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The night before results day, make sure your teen has plenty of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/the-night-before-an-exam-a-parent-checklist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good quality sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This could be by email or post as well as in person, so it\u2019s best to check.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. Have a plan for the day<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give them as much control as possible on the day. Little things like asking them what they want for breakfast, and what they\u2019d like to do before and after getting their results can help them feel in control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they need to go into the school to pick them up and they\u2019re already feeling worried about their results, it might be best to go in early. This way they can get what they need and leave quickly if they don\u2019t want to share their results with other teens in their year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Have a results day checklist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few technical things to double-check like making sure they have the right login details and timings for their results, so it\u2019s best to make a checklist.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The phone number of your child\u2019s school <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 whether they\u2019re receiving their results from home or getting them from their school, call to confirm what time they\u2019ll be released.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Your child\u2019s photo ID <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 take this with you if you\u2019re going to the school to get their results in person, just in case the school asks for it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Their school login details <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 if results are being shared online, make sure they have the website and logins to access them easily.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Information on appeals <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 if your teen is unhappy with their grades and wants to appeal their results, they\u2019ll need to contact their school or college. This is so that their teachers can then contact the exam board. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCAS site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a lot of useful advice on how to do this.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phone numbers of universities (for A Level students) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 if they miss a university offer, your teen can call their chosen university (or any universities that they applied for outside of their firm or insurance choice). Some universities may have places that have opened up or can share information about Clearing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">The link to UCAS clearing (for A Level students)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 the <\/span><a style=\"font-size: revert; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/undergraduate\/results-confirmation-and-clearing\/what-clearing\"><span>UCAS Clearing process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means that they could still get a place at a good university this year, even if they didn\u2019t quite achieve the grades for that course. There\u2019s also a Clearing app that your teen can download which shows all the universities with places for their ideal course.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>3. Encourage them to focus on themselves<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they\u2019re unhappy with their resu<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lts, encourage them to stay off their phone for a little bit. It might be hard for them to see how their friends have done on social media. And there might be questions like, \u2018How did you do?\u2019 that are tough to stomach if they\u2019re feeling disappointed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What matters most is their next steps. Once they\u2019ve had a bit of time to take it in, have a chat about the future. What do they want to do? How can they still reach their goals?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Do something to celebrate them<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great way to reassure your teen \u2013 whatever results they\u2019ve got \u2013 is to have something fun planned for later on. This could be making their favourite meal, watching a film or celebrating with friends. Get them excited about the future<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the rush of results day has died down, offer to help them with their next steps. You could start by researching their future options online together, or get them excited for the subjects they\u2019ll be studying next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Talk to their teachers if they\u2019re not happy with their results<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your teen can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tes.com\/magazine\/analysis\/secondary\/gcse-resits-everything-you-need-know\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retake their exams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they\u2019re not happy with their results. The best person to talk to is their subject teacher \u2013 they might be around on results day, or you or your teen can email them to get their advice before making any final decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student doesn\u2019t pass their Maths or English GCSEs, they\u2019re required to retake them. National retake exams will happen in November. Reach out to your child\u2019s school for more information on this as the deadline for those subject entries will be early October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can also resit any of their other GCSE exams at this time. These exams will run throughout November and the deadline for entries will be mid-September. Check with your teen\u2019s school for exact dates, as these should be made available to you well ahead of results day.
