It\u2019s exam season already! You\u2019re probably getting on with your revision. Learning how <\/em>to answer exam questions can be just as important as revising your subjects. There\u2019s a skill to answering them\u2013and the good news is you can learn it here. Below, we\u2019ll go over some tips on how to read questions (yes-read<\/em>) and then how to go about answering them.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s dive in…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Read the question.<\/a><\/li>
  2. Underline key words in the question.<\/a><\/li>
  3. Plan your answer and keep track of time.<\/a><\/li>
  4. Make sure you\u2019re backing your answer.<\/a><\/li>
  5. Come back to the question.<\/a><\/li>
  6. With multiple choice questions\u2013get rid of wrong answers.<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    1. Read the question.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This might sound super obvious but with the pressure of the exam hall, a lot of students don\u2019t read exam questions carefully. Your eyes might skim over the question and miss what it\u2019s asking you to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Underline key words in the question.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To make sure you get what the question is asking you, underline key words. Exam question words might ask you to: describe, explain, analyse, compare, contrast, examine, discuss. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here\u2019s a breakdown of what some of those words actually mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Question words<\/strong><\/td>What they\u2019re asking you to do<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>

    Define<\/td>
    Tell us (explain!) what this means. <\/td><\/tr>

    Describe<\/td>
    What is that? Give details about the topic so that we understand it better. <\/td><\/tr>


    Illustrate<\/td>

    Explain with proof and details\u2013this can be with diagrams and examples.<\/td><\/tr>

    Compare and contrast<\/td>
    Show how the things in the question are alike and different. <\/td><\/tr>


    Discuss<\/td>

    Go over a topic in detail. Explain the pros and cons\u2013all sides of it.<\/td><\/tr>



    Analyse<\/td>

    Break down the topic into parts. Then look at how those parts are connected. Think of the pros and cons of them, and use evidence to back up what you say. <\/td><\/tr>

    Summarise<\/td>
    Give short and clear descriptions of the main points.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
