They\u2019ve spent ages revising, and now the big day is so close. As a parent, you want to help them relax so that when they\u2019re in the exam hall, they can feel their absolute best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, here are 9 ways you can support them the night and morning before an exam.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The night before an exam&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2611\ufe0f Make sure they eat something<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A healthy, balanced dinner will help set them up for the big day. And if they have no appetite \u2013 which can happen with exam nerves \u2013 give them healthy snacks through the evening. Carrots and hummus, fruit skewers, and light carbohydrates like rice or popcorn will give them the fuel they need.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Remind them to pack their school bag<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Having everything ready to go will make the morning run much smoother. They can pack their exam essentials the night before: black pens, rulers, calculators, water bottles, snacks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can encourage them to put their own checklist together so they\u2019re sure they\u2019ve got everything. They should set out their clothes too. Even with a uniform, it\u2019s better to have it all laid out so there\u2019s no last minute panic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Help them switch off<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some teens just can\u2019t pull themselves away from revising and might carry on until the last minute. If they want to keep working on it the night before their exam, make sure their revision is light. They can revise with flashcards, or look over cheat sheets. But practicing a whole exam paper might be too much and make them feel anxious instead of calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they\u2019ve done all the studying they can do, they just need to chill out. Whether that means watching their favourite show, or soaking in the bath \u2013 encourage them to relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Give them lots of encouragement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Teens, like the rest of us, want to feel understood. Acknowledge that exams can be tough and let them know you\u2019re proud of all the effort they\u2019ve put into revising. Remind them that you\u2019ll be proud of them, whatever their grades. You can even have some fun with a mini celebration after each exam. A small treat like ice cream or a trip to the cinema can really boost their mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Make sure they get an early night<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know that sleep is important, but we still stay up! To get a good night\u2019s sleep, encourage your teen to stay off their screens for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/how-sleep-works\/how-electronics-affect-sleep#:~:text=We%20recommend%20avoiding%20computers%2C%20smartphones,work%20or%20study%20at%20night.\">1-2 hours<\/a> before bed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ll probably know that sleep is important before an exam, but they may struggle to nod off if they\u2019re feeling anxious. So if you can, chill out.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The morning before the exam\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Listen to feel-good music<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Listening to music they love can help to boost their mood and calm their mind on the day of the exam. Even better, turn on the tunes in the shower \u2013 this will help them to wake up and kickstart their brains and bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Eat a healthy breakfast<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like with dinner, it\u2019s important for your teen to eat something before their exam \u2013\u00a0even if they\u2019re feeling the pre-exam jitters. They need fuel and energy to perform at their best, so opt for foods like eggs, brown toast, peanut butter, bananas, yoghurt and nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2611\ufe0f <strong>Aim to arrive early<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Encourage your teen to arrive at the exam\u2019s location a bit early. This means they won\u2019t feel rushed and they can get comfortable with their surroundings.
