Revising and sitting exams can be super stressful for your teen. Of course you want to help them feel their best, but it\u2019s not always easy to know how to go about it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were very lucky to have Dr Louise Egan\u2013 a clinical psychologist and child mental health specialist\u2013 share her top parenting tips in &#8220;Exam Season Parenting&#8221;, a two-part course with us. Here, we sum up 6 tips you can use to help your teen during exam season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><a href=\"#-Follow-their-lead.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#-Follow-their-lead.\">Follow their lead.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Encourage-self-care.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#Encourage-self-care.\">Encourage self-care.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Coach-vs-control.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#Coach-vs-control.\">Coach vs control.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#If-they-want-space,-you-can-still-show-them-you-care.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#If-they-want-space,-you-can-still-show-them-you-care.\">If they want space, you can still show them you care.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Try-to-find-a-regular-time-to-talk.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#Try-to-find-a-regular-time-to-talk.\">Try to find a regular time to talk.<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"#Look-after-your-own-wellbeing,-too.\" data-type=\"internal\" data-id=\"#Look-after-your-own-wellbeing,-too.\">Look after your own wellbeing, too.<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"-Follow-their-lead.\">1. <strong>Follow their lead.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might not always see eye-to-eye with your teen. Their idea of how much time they should spend with the family, for example, might be quite different than yours. At this busy time when they\u2019ve got lots on their plate, it\u2019s best to follow their lead. Ask them how you can help. If they want to be on their own, give them space, but let them know you\u2019re here if they need you. And if they\u2019re feeling overwhelmed do what you can to make things easier on them. This might mean relaxing household chores until things settle down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Encourage-self-care.\">2. <strong>Encourage self-care.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wellbeingemail.jpg\" alt=\"mother-and-son-doing-yoga\" class=\"wp-image-9602 lazyload\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 450px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 450\/300;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wellbeingemail.jpg\" alt=\"mother-and-son-doing-yoga\" class=\"wp-image-9602\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If they\u2019re overworking, it can affect their learning\u2013 the exact thing they\u2019re afraid of. Remind them to take breaks. You can encourage them to play their favourite music, light candles\u2013whatever helps them feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help them find quick ways to self-soothe, Louise suggests getting an old shoe box and having them fill it with things that make them feel happy and calm. Nice smelling shower gel, pictures of happy times, cream, candles. That way, they can just go to their box whenever they need to calm themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Coach-vs-control.\">3. <strong>Coach vs control.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever noticed that when you try to control them, they push back? Invite them instead to problem solve <em>with<\/em> you. If you want them to spend more time revising for example, ask them to help you come up with solutions. They might say, \u2018less time doing chores,\u2019 and you might add, \u2018less time gaming.\u2019 Together you can pick solutions that work for you both. Making them part of the decision-making will give them a feeling of control. There\u2019s a much better chance they\u2019ll actually follow through when they\u2019re involved!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"If-they-want-space,-you-can-still-show-them-you-care.\">4. <strong>If they want space, you can still show them you care.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Teens like to spend more time on their own anyway\u2013nevermind that they\u2019ve got exams to revise for. But you can still connect with them in other ways. You can leave little gifts, snacks and nice messages behind their door. And you can also try to draw them out of their room with fun activities\u2013like film Fridays. And there\u2019s a good chance then that your teen will open up to you when they\u2019ve got a problem. You can check in when you\u2019re in the car together, or in the kitchen when they\u2019re on their revision break. It can be super casual like this, and it\u2019s best to keep the chat light and fun. Praise them for what they\u2019re doing well. It doesn\u2019t have to be related to school. Boosting their confidence with praise and encouragement at this time will help them feel more settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Look-after-your-own-wellbeing,-too.\">6. <strong>Look after your own wellbeing, too.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re worried about your teen, they can easily pick up on your stress. This can actually add to their own feelings of anxiety. As Louise puts it, \u2018You can\u2019t serve from an empty vessel.\u2019 So to help them through exam season, it\u2019s a good idea to take time to relax. Soak in a bath, meditate\u2013 whatever makes you feel calm. When you\u2019re recharged, it\u2019ll be easier to deal with their problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that this intense time in your teen\u2019s life is hard on them\u2013 and on you. With emotions running high, It\u2019s completely normal to feel overwhelmed.
