The same goes for the way you learn. There are some techniques you go back to over and over again out of habit. Maybe you like to watch videos or listen for key information in a recording or you\u2019re a big fan of mind maps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you work out what your study habits are, answer these questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>How do I usually study? (for example, by reading over notes? Watching videos? Drawing? Partnered work?)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Which kind of study activities do I like the most? (debating? Making diagrams? Quizzing a friend?)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>What kind of study activities do I usually dread? (drafting essays? Reading from a textbook? Group work?)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While it\u2019s useful for you to know about your go-to study habits, try not to give yourself a label, like, \u2018I\u2019m a visual learner\u2019. There\u2019s more than <a href=\"https:\/\/bigthink.com\/the-learning-curve\/learning-styles-myth\/\">one way they take in information<\/a>, and using lots of different study techniques and activities can help you go deeper when you\u2019re learning a subject.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Our-tutors\u2019-top-study-tips\">Our tutors\u2019 top study tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our tutors &#8211; who are students themselves at top UK unis &#8211; know that every person learns differently. Copying a phrase from a board 10 times and hoping it will sink in might feel like a drain. Hearing the way real people talk in French can be really motivating and it gives you something to shoot for. I use songs and chants to learn tenses and other important grammar points, even though it might seem cringy. Watching films or TV adaptations of texts to see what themes are conveyed in different performances are so helpful (especially for Shakespeare!). I struggled with organisation and time management and I found it difficult to concentrate too. My best advice is to work in short chunks and to have lots of little breaks between to recharge. If you can find tech (like a screen reader or something that converts speech to text) that can be a really useful aid! Flashcards are perfect for remembering key words! Brain dumps are a great study hack for active recall &#8211; I mostly use them to link concepts across a topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;For A-level Physics, I mostly used exam questions and spaced repetition to understand key words. This is when you write down facts about a topic on paper from memory and then correct what you missed. For History, you need to remember lots of information about a topic to write an essay, so that technique really worked for me. I used flashcards and topic questions for A-Level Chemistry and Biology. With those subjects, it&#8217;s not just about remembering and writing down information, it&#8217;s about being able to apply that knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2013Orla, Chemistry and Biology tutor<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you recognise any of your own study techniques? Of course, what works for one person might not work for another. But trying out different strategies can help make the information sink in better.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Mixing-things-up\">Mixing things up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying in the same way over and over again can get boring fast and it\u2019s actually not the best use of your time. Our expert tutor Matt suggests mixing up study activities. By doing this, you\u2019re giving yourself more chances to go deeper into learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Study menu to match your mood<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a variety of study activities in (like a well-balanced diet!), you can put together a menu, made up of high, medium and low intensity activities. So if you\u2019re tired after a long day at school, choose an activity from the low energy list. You\u2019ll still be learning, but it doesn\u2019t have to feel like torture. Whether it\u2019s skateboarding, playing football, public speaking or looking after your cat\u2013 there are things you do well. And it all comes down to feeling passionate about what you\u2019re doing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking, \u2018I can\u2019t be passionate about GCSE Maths!\u2019- we get it. But you can be curious and feel a buzz when you solve a problem on your own. A lot of the time, students dislike subjects that they\u2019re struggling in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some ways you can tap into your strengths:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Be OK with making mistakes. <\/strong>If you think of mistakes as a normal part of learning, then you\u2019ll feel less overwhelmed when challenges come up. So many famous people have faced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytutor.co.uk\/blog\/parents\/from-setback-to-success-8-film-characters-who-didnt-give-up\/\"> setbacks and failures<\/a>, and have gone on to do amazing things.<\/li><li><strong>Keep doing activities you love.<\/strong> Doing what you love puts you in a flow state\u2013 and that\u2019s a great way to build up your confidence.
