Low motivation can often show up as withdrawal, unresponsiveness and an apparent lack of effort. This can be disheartening as a tutor, and can make lessons feel difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons why students may be lacking motivation to engage in lessons. Perhaps they don&#8217;t believe that they can improve, or they may even have personal challenges making it more difficult for them to focus and engage. Often a lack of motivation is a sign of lack of confidence. It also helps <strong>establish a good rapport which can be encouraging for pupils<\/strong>, and help them to feel supported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with pupils who find it difficult to engage and complete tasks requires kindness and patience. <strong>Praising effort and recognising small amounts of progress <\/strong>can help students to feel encouraged and rewarded. Giving feedback constructively and making sure to offer positives as well as improvements is a great way to guide improvement without leaving pupils feeling discouraged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also help to <strong>give students options for ways of communicating.<\/strong> Some pupils might prefer to share ideas verbally, whereas others may feel more comfortable sharing using the chat function. To combat this, it can be helpful to <strong>split lessons into smaller, more manageable chunks<\/strong> and maybe even break up tasks with small activities. This\u2019ll make completing work seem more achievable. Also, offering praise for completion of each chunk can help to give your pupils a sense of accomplishment that will hopefully encourage them to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#03ccba\">\n<li class=\"has-large-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#03ccba\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Make learning fun<\/mark><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Including fun activities can also help pupils to feel more motivated. Learning and testing of content can be done through different creative tasks such as <strong>word searches or matching pairs activities<\/strong>. These could be starter activities to ease into the lesson, ways of breaking up a lesson or ways of testing recall. This can be tackled by <strong>starting with the basics and building up incrementally<\/strong> to avoid overwhelming them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It could also be helpful to give worked examples or adopt an \u201cI do, you do, we do\u201d approach, where you <strong>start by showing them how to answer and then try a task together before asking the student to approach it on their own<\/strong>. For example, using <strong>certain colours or fonts may be helpful for some students with dyslexia or structuring lessons slightly differently may help some neurodiverse pupils.<\/strong> Keep an eye out, as teachers may have provided some of this information in the pupil&#8217;s notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To summarise, tutoring pupils who don\u2019t seem motivated or engaged in sessions can be really challenging for tutors.
